SOLEMNITY OF THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD OF THE YEAR A

THEME: It's time for your deliverance!

Beloved when you dwell for long in the darkness of the night, you have only one desire: to find the light of day. In fact, we scan the sky for the rising sun. This is what these magi do. They are looking for the Messiah of the Hebrew and they know that he is the true King of all nations. He is the light of the nations and it is he who delivers from the darkness of sin. They welcome this star which marks His advent and follow it since they visibly want to come out of their darkness. It was time for their freedom from the bondage of sin because the glory of the Lord had risen on them as the first reading told us so well. While the magi welcome this star and follow it to discover the messiah who comes to save them, Herod does not seem to want to come out of his darkness. And it is often our attitude. Even when Jesus comes to us freely without we seeking Him, our hearts are so closed like that of Herod that we do not welcome him. How do we hope to be freed from the blindness of sin?

Beloved, these magi show us the attitude to adopt when we really want to get out of our darkness: seek, find and follow Christ! Besides, they do not go to Jesus with dangling arms! They go there with their arms laden with very significant gifts: the gold, symbol of the royalty of Christ; the incense, symbol of his divinity; the myrrh, foreshadowing of his imminent death (burial) to save mankind. These precious gifts come from their hearts. Beyond this symbolism, they also represent the detachment shown by these magi to honor the Messiah, the light of all nations. It is an invitation to offer to our Rising Sun all that we have that are dear, precious, etc. to us and which often take the place of God in our life, so that Jesus may have primacy in everything and deliver us from our darkness.

Beloved, if today you hear the voice of the Lord inviting you to welcome Jesus, the light of the nations, to be set free from your darkness,  harden not your heart. Amen

THEME: C’est l’heure de ta délivrance !

Bien-aimé(e)s lorsqu’on demeure longtemps dans l’obscurité de la nuit, on a qu’un seul désir : retrouver la lumière du jour. Au fait on scrute le ciel à la recherche du soleil levant. C’est ce que font ces mages. Ils sont à la recherche de ce messie du peuple hébreux et ils savent qu’il est le véritable Roi de toutes les nations sans exception. Il est la lumière des nations et c’est lui qui délivre l’obscurité du péché. Ils accueillent cette étoile qui marque son avènement et la suivent puisqu’ils veulent visiblement sortir de leur obscurité. C’est l’heure de leur libération qui a sonné car la gloire du Seigneur s’est levée sur eux comme nous le dit si bien la première lecture. Alors que les mages accueillent cette étoile et la suivent pour découvrir ce messie qui vient les sauver, Hérode semble ne pas vouloir sortir de son obscurité. Et c’est bien souvent notre attitude à nous. Même quand Jésus vient à nous librement sans que nous l’ayons cherché, nos cœurs sont si renfermés comme celui d’Hérode qu’on ne lui fait pas bon accueil. Comment espérions nous être libérés de l’aveuglement du péché ?

Bien-aimé(e)s, ces mages nous montrent l’attitude à adopter quand on veut réellement sortir de notre obscurité : rechercher, trouver et suivre le Christ ! D’ailleurs ils ne vont pas à Jésus les bras ballants ! Ils y vont les bras chargés de présents très significatifs :  l’or symbole de la royauté du Christ, l’encens symbole de sa divinité, la myrrhe préfiguration de sa mort (ensevelissement) prochaine pour sauver l’humanité. Ces précieux cadeaux viennent de leur cœur. Au-delà de ce symbolisme, ils représentent aussi le détachement dont fait montre ces mages pour honorer le messie, la lumière de toutes les nations. C’est une invitation à offrir à Notre Soleil levant tout ce que nous avons de chers, de précieux, etc. et qui souvent prennent la place de Dieu dans notre vie, afin que Jésus ait la primauté en tout et nous délivre de notre obscurité.

Bien-aimé(e) si aujourd’hui tu entends la voix du Seigneur t’invitant à accueillir Jésus, la lumière des nations, pour être libéré de ton obscurité, n’endurcis pas ton cœur. Amen
