SIXTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME OF THE YEAR C

THEME: Hospitality

Beloved today is the sixteenth Sunday in ordinary time of the year C. Today's gospel is a follow up of that of last Sunday which taught us about the identity of our neighbor and our attitude towards him. The care we need to offer to the neighbor in reveals in the warmth welcome reserved to these singular strangers both in the first reading and in the gospel. Martha and Mary welcome in their home Jesus while Abraham and Sara welcome three strangers. But without knowing all of them welcomed God himself. Our hospitality towards those who meet on our way is hospitality to him who has made us in his image and likeness. Does Jesus not say that "whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of Mine, you did for Me " (Mt 25:40)!

An important thing here is the manner in which this hospitality is offered. Abraham and Mary stay with their hosts while Sara and Martha were busy in kitchen to prepare food for them. But what they really needed was the closeness Abraham and Mary showed. The remark of Jesus convinces us well: "Martha, Martha,” the Lord replied, “you are worried and upset about many things.But only one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, and it will not be taken away from her” ( Lk 10, 41-42). This certainly does not mean that Martha's desire to feed Jesus is bad, but it is not essential for now. Martha wanted to please Jesus but she could not discern what would really please him. Is it not often our attitude? In our desire to welcome our stranger, instead of discerning what he/she really needs and what would please him/her, we do what we planned and think it will please him/her.

Abraham and Mary understood that their guests needed peace, a reassuring and comforting presence. We understand better this thirst, looking at the mission they are to accomplish. Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem to suffer his passion to free man from the bondage of sin. And the strangers of Abraham were also on their way to Sodom to eradicate the burden of sin. A heavy mission that required them to spend time with people who fear God to rest before continuing their journey.

Beloved in the Lord, two important things in this experience of Mary and Abraham that we need to learn. First of all, by being hospitable we invite God to our home and secondly our hospitality must be inventive so that it should become truly beneficial and useful to those to whom we offer it.

Beloved, if today you hear the voice of the Lord inviting you to be hospitable, harden not your heart. Amen

THEME : L’hospitalité

Bien-aimé(e)s nous sommes au seizième dimanche du temps ordinaire de l’année C. L’évangile d’aujourd’hui est la suite logique de celui du dimanche dernier qui nous a instruit sur l’identité de notre prochain et notre attitude envers lui. Le soin a apporté au prochain se manifeste dans l’accueil réservé à ces étrangers singuliers tant dans la première lecture que dans l’évangile. Marthe et Marie accueillent dans leur maison Jésus tandis qu’Abraham et Sara accueillent trois inconnus. Mais sans le savoir tous accueillaient Dieu lui-même. Notre hospitalité envers ceux qui sont sur nos chemins est hospitalité envers celui-là qui nous a fait à son image et à sa ressemblance. Jésus ne dit-il pas que « ce que vous avez fait à l’un de ces plus petits de mes frères c’est à moi que vous l’avez fait » (Mt 25, 40)!

Une chose capitale ici est la manière dont cette hospitalité est offerte. Abraham et Marie restent auprès de leurs hôtes tandis que Sara et Marthe s’attèlent à leur préparer à manger. Mais ce dont ils avaient véritablement besoin c’était de cette proximité dont faisaient montre Abraham et Marie. La remarque de Jésus nous en convainc bien : « Marthe, Marthe, tu te donnes du souci pour bien de choses. Une seule est nécessaire. Marie a choisi la meilleure part, elle ne lui sera pas enlevée » (Lc 10, 41-42). Cela ne veut certainement pas dire que le désir de Marthe de nourrir Jésus est mauvais mais ce n’est pas ce qui lui est essentiel à présent. Marthe voulait faire plaisir à Jésus mais elle n’est pas parvenue à discerner ce qui lui ferait réellement plaisir. N’est ce pas souvent notre attitude à nous ? Dans notre désir de bien accueillir notre étranger, au lieu souvent de discerner ce dont il a réellement besoin et qui lui ferait plaisir, on fait plutôt ce que nous avions planifié pensant lui faire plaisir.

Abraham et Marie ont bien compris que leurs hôtes avaient besoin de quiétude, d’une présence rassurante et réconfortante. On comprend mieux cette soif vue la mission qu’ils devraient accomplir. Jésus était route pour Jérusalem afin d’y souffrir sa passion pour libérer l’homme de la servitude du péché. Et les étrangers d’Abraham étaient aussi en route pour Sodome afin d’y éradiquer le poids du péché. Mission lourde qui nécessitait pour eux de passer du temps avec des personnes qui craignent Dieu pour se reposer avant de continuer leur chemin.

Bien-aimé(e)s dans le Seigneur, deux choses importantes dans cette expérience de Marie et Abraham qu’il nous faut apprendre. En premier lieu notons qu’en étant accueillant nous invitons Dieu dans notre demeure et en deuxième lieu notre hospitalité doit être inventive afin qu’elle soit réellement bénéfique et utile à ceux à qui nous l’offrons.
